Funko Pops and BBQ

Over the weekend my boyfriend and I took a trip to IKEA to buy more shelves for our funko-pop collection. Anyone who knows us knows how much we have grown this collection (mostly him) and the amount of money invested. The shelving we got was very nice and affordable but damn, IKEA makes you put in that work to assemble everything. I thought it was all smooth sailing and completed it within 30 minutes but having to mount it to the wall to prevent it from tipping over was a trip. I swear to god, this took another 30 minutes cause mfs didn’t provide the two screws I needed to mount it. I had to get creative and eventually figure it out. Overall, I can say that he is happy with the outcome and that makes me happy as well. Plus it looks sick.

Today, I finally had the chance to barbecue after waiting for the perfect weather. After all the shit weather we had I finally made the time to pop open the grill. The day was bright and clear, ideal for outdoor cooking. I also decided to get in some jump roping while waiting for the coals. Did you know jump roping has many benefits? It’s a highly efficient cardiovascular workout that gets the heart pumping and the blood flowing, helping to improve cardiovascular health and endurance. Additionally, jump roping is excellent for burning calories and aiding weight loss or management. It engages multiple muscle groups, including the legs, arms, and core, making it a full-body workout that strengthens muscles and improves overall coordination and balance. Furthermore, it's a versatile exercise that can be done almost anywhere, requiring minimal equipment and space. Whether used as a warm-up, a standalone workout, or incorporated into a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) routine, jump roping offers an effective and enjoyable way to boost fitness levels and achieve health goals. That didn’t last too long because the steak and chicken I made was GAS. I must say, in spring it is cold af outside. I will never get used to the Midwest weather. One day it’s 70s then the next is the 30s. Today was one of those sunny cold days that made being outside enjoyable. I am thankful for that and at least I could get fresh air instead of staring at my screen all day.

I know, I am lackin on my blogs recently but it’s alright because we got it done. I am honestly feeling a lot better and productive today on my day off more than anything and I am so happy for the progress I made over the last two days. I was able to read my bible and get myself closer to God. I made some tea and relaxed a bit, ate good food, and got a workout in for the day. I will take this dub and prepare myself for a long week of work.

A Recipe for Disaster

Over the last week I have been craving a fat juicy steak. If you haven’t read my last couple of posts or spoke with me, I complained about how much pain my tooth has been in and how I will probably need another root canal. With that being said, chewing on the right side of my mouth scares me. It’s like waiting for the pain to happen. During this time, I realized how much I miss the foods I would eat without hesitation. Steak being one of them. At work, my coworkers and I were talking about a lunch our boss would get us if we achieved a certain sales goal. This led to talking about steak and my cravings instantly began. Whether it's grilled, seared in a pan, or roasted in the oven, thinking about steak makes me hungry af.

Over the last week or so, my tooth hasn’t hurt as much or at all most days. So it is a lot easier to chew on and I dont feel much pain. Today I decided I was gonna pop the grill and slab some ribeyes on there. But of course, my luck is the absolute worst. We have a fcking tornado warning. I dont know about you guys but high wind and hot coals just sounds like a recipe for disaster. Maybe, with all the wind this storm makes can make the coals hotter quicker and then my food will cook faster. Nah but I looked outside and so far it looks fine. In this area they take this weather shit seriously. I mean why wouldn’t they? Their storms are so much more intense than anything Hawaii has. If a tornado hit Hawaii, we would be f*cked. Any natural disaster for that matter considering how small the island is. I mean, you seen what happen when Lihue lit on fire. Truly devastating.

But anyways, this blog was mainly to contemplate whether or not I should grill or just cook in doors. I really want to grill my steak and my chicken apple sausage for my meal prep the next few days. I really don’t feel like doing a lot of dishes and I need to wash my hair anyways so I might as well smell like barbeque.

Bowling Strikes Back

Over this past weekend, I found myself in the midst of what can only be described as a complete disaster, embarrassing, and an overall bowling nightmare. I decided to bowl a Women’s tournament even after second guessing myself. As I entered the alley, all I could think of is how much I didn’t want to lose money, but at the same time my confidence in that alley has never been higher. My scores are usually pretty good, spare shooting is a lot better, and I feel more free. As practice begun, I was able to strike majority of my shots. I thought to myself ‘damn this shit will blow open so quick’. And unfortunately, my intuition was spot on. The pins seemed to mock me as my balls consistently missed their mark, leaving me with a score that felt more like a slap in the face than a reflection of my skill.

But the disappointment didn't end there. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, I faced a similar struggle during league last night. It was like déjà vu, except this time the frustration was amplified by the weight of consecutive defeats. Bowling, a sport that had brought me joy and satisfaction in the past, suddenly felt like an insurmountable challenge.

In moments like these, it's easy to succumb to self-doubt and despair. I questioned my abilities, my dedication, and whether I had what it takes to bounce back from such a demoralizing slump. But amidst the turmoil, I realized that setbacks are an inevitable part of any journey, whether on the lanes or in life.

It's during these rough patches that we truly discover our resilience and strength of character. Instead of dwelling on my failures, I chose to embrace them as opportunities for growth. Every frustrating day, every bad shot, every split, served as a valuable lesson in humility and perseverance. After all, it's easy to be a good sport when you're winning, but true champions are forged in the crucible of defeat. I can honestly say I did not get hot headed and remained leveled for the most part.

I remind myself that this bullsh*t will pass. Bowling is a game of highs and lows, even when you feel like it’s the end of the world after a bad day. I tell myself to let it go, keep pushing forward, to trust in the process, and to have faith that better days lie ahead. As frustrating as it may be, these moments of adversity are what make the victories all the sweeter.

So, if any of you are facing your own trials and tribulations, I offer this simple piece of advice: keep your head up, keep grinding, and never lose sight of why you fell in love with the game in the first place. Remember, it's not the defeats that define us, but how we rise from them that truly matters.

In the end, it's just a bad day not a bad life.

Tasty Temptations and Toothaches

As you know from reading my past blogs, I am struggling with some dental issues which causes pain on my jaw. This prevents me from eating all the things I love the most. I can still eat what I want but in smaller amounts and pieces. This includes rice, sweet potatoes, or potatoes. Anything soft that won’t agitate my tooth basically. Here are some healthy recipes I wish I could be eating or what I can be eating.

Apple Cider Pork Chops

Ingredients:

  • 4 pork loin chops

  • Flour

  • Olive oil

  • Butter (divided)

  • Salt and pepper

  • Finely chopped shallot

  • Minced garlic

  • Fresh apple cider

  • A sprigs of fresh thyme

  • Low-fat milk / cream

Instructions:

  1. Lightly season your pork chops with flour and your favorite seasonings.

  2. Airfry pork chops for 20-25 minutes on 375 degrees

  3. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Once the butter has melted, add the shallots and garlic, and sauté until they are both softened and fragrant, which will take only about 30 seconds to one minute. Deglaze the skillet with the apple cider (Deglazing simply means adding liquid to a hot pan to loosen stuck bits, by the way.)

  4. Add the pork chops in the pan with some Thyme and baste the pork with your sauce. Pork needs to hit 145 F internally for safety)

  5. Serve with mashed sweet potatoes and garlic green beans

    Grilled Steak with Chimichurri Sauce

    Ingredients:

    • 2 (8-ounce) beef sirloin steaks

    • Salt and pepper to taste

    • 2 tablespoons olive oil

    Chimichurri Sauce:

    • 1 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

    • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped

    • 3 cloves garlic, minced

    • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

    • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

    • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

    • Salt and pepper to taste

    Instructions:

    1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.

    2. Season the steaks generously with salt and pepper/ seasonings of your choice on both sides.

    3. Drizzle the steaks with olive oil and rub it into the meat.

    4. Place the steaks on the preheated grill and cook for 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, or adjust the cooking time according to your desired doneness.

    5. While the steaks are grilling, prepare the chimichurri sauce. In a small bowl, combine the chopped parsley, cilantro, minced garlic, red wine vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, dried oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.

    6. Once the steaks are cooked to your liking, remove them from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes.

    7. Slice the steaks against the grain and serve with a generous drizzle of chimichurri sauce on top.

    8. Enjoy your grilled steak with chimichurri sauce alongside your favorite side dishes like roasted vegetables or a green salad.

Baked Salmon with Lemon and Dill

    Ingredients:

    • 4 salmon fillets (about 6 ounces each)

    • Zest of 1 lemon

    • 2 cloves garlic, minced

    • 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped

    • Lemon slices for garnish (optional)

    • Fresh dill sprigs for garnish (optional)

    Instructions:

    1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with olive oil.

    2. Place the salmon fillets on the prepared baking sheet and season them with salt and pepper on both sides.

    3. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, lemon zest, minced garlic, and chopped dill.

    6. Bake the salmon in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.

    7. Once cooked, remove the salmon from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

    8. Serve the baked salmon with your favorite side dishes such as steamed vegetables, quinoa, or a green salad.

My root canal saga

Does anyone else HATE root canals? It’s the dental procedure that strikes fear into the hearts of even the bravest souls. But for me, it's become a bizarre rite of passage, a recurring event in my life that will go down in dental history. Here I am, staring down the barrel of my fifth root canal, and let me tell you, it’s starting to feel like a bizarre dental Groundhog Day. Get ready for Snapchats of my numb-half grins and the sound of drills within the next month or so.

Let’s rewind a bit. Picture this: a sunny day hanging out with my friends at Waimea Bay blissfully unaware that yet another toothache is lurking around the corner. Me and my friend Amber stand on the rock growing the balls to jump and once we did we felt great. Before heading back to school I had a dentist appointment and through some x-rays, they asked me if I got hit in the face. I told them that I did not do anything physical. Well come to find out, I landed in the water wrong and ended up cracking my root. You see, I've come to accept that my teeth have a vendetta against me. They’re like mischievous little gremlins plotting their next attack, and I, unfortunately, am their favorite target. That’s were the chain began.

Now, I like to think of myself as a seasoned root canal veteran. I’ve been through the drill (pun totally intended) more times than I care to admit. Each time, I tell myself, “This will be the last one,” only to find myself back in the dentist’s chair, holding onto dear life as they work their magic—or should I say, their torture devices?

But hey, if life gives you lemons, make lemonade, right? In my case, if life gives you root canals, make tooth fairy jokes. I’ve become somewhat of a connoisseur in the art of finding humor in the most unlikely of places. I mean, who else can boast about having a collection of dental x-rays that rivals a modern art gallery?

And let’s not forget the perks of being a frequent flyer at the dentist’s office. I practically have my own VIP lounge by now. The receptionist back home greets me with a sympathetic smile, the dental hygienist knows me by name, and the dentist—well, let’s just say we’re on a first-name basis at this point. They are listed under my favorites in my contacts.

But in all seriousness, while my dental misadventures may provide endless material for comedy, they’ve also taught me a thing or two about resilience. You see, every time I find myself facing another root canal, I’m reminded of just how resilient the human spirit can be. Despite the pain, the discomfort, and the endless trips to the dentist, I always emerge on the other side with a smile—albeit a slightly lopsided one, thanks to the numbing agents.

So here I am, gearing up for yet another round of dental warfare, armed with nothing but my trusty sense of humor and a healthy dose of dental floss. Any one who knows me knows I love to floss because I hate food between my teeth. Will this be the last root canal? Who knows. But one thing’s for sure: as long as there are teeth to be saved and jokes to be made, I’ll be here, ready to face whatever comes my way—root canals and all.

We love Monday’s

Today is not off to the best start. IT DIDN’T START TODAY THOUGH. I had the worst fucking pain of my life starting Saturday evening. Here I am just enjoying my din din and I feel a pain on my bottom right tooth. This was weird to me as I got a root canal on that specific tooth so the nerve should be dead right? I got it over 3 years ago so in theory, there should be no problem. Not to mention it is already capped so it should be fine. I take some Ibuprofen hoping it will help the pain and it will be gone in the morning. Come Sunday morning my mouth and my jaw are HURTIN. I still take more Ibuprofen and the pain subsides but it still hurts to chew on that side of my mouth. Since it is the weekend, the dentist isn’t open so I decided to wait until 8:00 am Monday to give them a call to get this straightened out and hope they can do an x-ray to see what is going on. I call them first thing in the morning and I am sent straight to their automated voicemail telling me that the office is closed. Naturally, I am thinking “Okay maybe they are just settling in, no big deal. I will call in 30 minutes”. 30 minutes pass and I get the same automated voice message telling me that the office is closed. There is a number to text in case of emergencies for their current patient. I sent a text hoping that they would respond soon. About another hour passes and I am a little concerned at this point. I decided just to drive up there and get an appointment myself. I see cars in the parking lot so I had some hope that the office would open and I would be seen. Then I saw a sign on the door that said “We are sorry for the inconvenience but we are closed due to renovations. The office will reopen on March 11th”. Somewhere along those lines and now I am boiling. I have to wait a whole week and endure this pain till the office is open. I’m sure if worse comes to worst, I will have to go to urgent care dental or something but do you know how much that’s gonna cost? I don’t know either but probably A LOT of money. My dental insurance isn’t the greatest but the dental office I attend does good work and treats me well so I guess my only option is to wait it out and keep poppin these pills. It sucks more than anything to have to wait it out and not know when the pain will reappear. Last night was pretty bad. I didn’t fall asleep until 2 am because of how much pain I was in.

Not sure if any of you had a toothache before but I don’t wish this type of pain upon anyone. You lose your appetite and the pain stays on your mind because it can cause some headaches. Luckily for me, I haven’t encountered pain while taking Ibuprofen but I remember a time that it wasn’t as effective as when I started it. So right now that is probably my biggest worry as I have a tournament on Sunday and league on Wednesday. Having this might hinder my performance. This blog could have been a review but I am not the type of person to shit on a business through online reviews. If it was a different store then maybe but nah. It is so unfortunate on my end that this pain pops up and my dental office is under renovations. Perfect timing if you ask me.

I took this time to b*tch about it to my boyfriend and my mom and well… here. I took my anger and stress with me to Walmart and bought more Pokemon cards just cause. My wallet cried but better than my eyes. I could’ve done that as a cheaper alternative but it’s alright might save that for later. I called out of work to not be seen today so I am also losing money. All I can do is pray and ask God to watch over me as this will be a long week. Catch me on Fortnite though grindin’ through the pain.

Overcoming procrastination and laziness

When I started to dedicate every other day to writing a blog, I found myself running out of creative ideas. I try to make these posts funny, amusing, relatable, or anything that people can enjoy. Overall, it is mostly for me to be able to journal and channel my thoughts throughout my life and make a story of it. Not like my life is interesting. Every day is the same routine. Wake up, go to work, come home, and play games. In between, I like to cook and watch whatever show I am watching. On weekends is where my life gets more interesting but what about on lazy weekends where I have nothing going on and I can relax? It is kinda weird because throughout the week my body is in work mode and doesn’t understand to take a break, like I always need to be doing something. I don’t know if I am just lazy or have writer’s block. It's like your brain's gone on vacation without telling you, leaving behind a 'Gone Fishing' sign in Comic Sans. I try all the classic remedies. I stare at the screen until my eyeballs feel like they will stage a mutiny. I drink enough tea to single-handedly keep Colombia's economy afloat and get sidetracked so much like I don’t have dishes waiting to be done and a carpet ready for the vacuum. Here are some ways I try to overcome procrastinating and keep myself going:

  1. Set hilariously low goals: Instead of aiming for the stars, set goals that are so low, that they're practically underground. "Today, I will reach my 10,000 step goal and start by taking out the trash”. Maybe." Celebrate your achievements with a victory shot (if you’re 21 years of age), preferably while still in your pajamas.

  2. Create a procrastination playlist: Compile a playlist of your favorite procrastination anthems. From "Pink Friday Girls" to "Greedy". The least you could do for yourself is feel like a hot girl while doing grown-up shit. Let the power of music fuel your procrastination journey.

  3. Channel your inner sloth: Embrace your inner sloth and make laziness an art form. Take a nap, perfect the art of the power lounge, and master the skill of staring into space with profound intensity. You just worked all week, get the reset you so desperately desire, and give your body a break.

  4. Create a procrastination shrine: Dedicate a corner of your room to the holy trinity of procrastination: snacks, comfy pillows, and your favorite distractions. Light candles from bath and body and let the scent fill the room. Nah doesn’t need to be bath and body, they mad expensive these days but I got mine on sale so sorry if you missed that…

  5. Make some food: You can’t work on an empty stomach. I find food to be one of the things that make me happy. If I am looking forward to some pho or ramen, you know damn well I am gonna make it. Try to avoid eating a big hearty breakfast or lunch because then you’ll just fatigue yourself and not want to do anything more than you already don’t.

I have come to the end of these steps and all I can think of is how short this blog might be. Its alright, most of you read on your phones anyway so it will look a lot longer there. Thanks for reading, I have to go charge the battery on my vacuum now. It’s chordless.

Mastering Meal Prep and My Favorite Recipes

In this fast-paced world where majority of individuals work 9-5 or being a full-time student, we often forget the importance of taking care of your body. Proper nutrition often takes a backseat as we look for something quick to eat so we can relax. By this time, the gym is out of the picture. Some people don’t have the energy to go or the motivation. This should not be an everyday thing. I think it is necessary for everyone to achieve at least 10,000 steps a day and to remain active. But on those days where we feel like being lazy, what if I told you that by meal prepping, you could elevate your life to new heights? In this guide, we'll explore how meal prep can be the secret weapon in your everyday life, helping you stay energized and focused. I will attach some of my favorite recipes at the end of this post.

The Basics of Meal Prep:

Meal prep isn't just for fitness fanatics or busy professionals—it's for anyone looking to optimize their time and nutrition. At its core, meal prep is simply the practice of preparing meals ahead of time. By dedicating a few hours each week to planning, shopping, and cooking, you can save precious time and ensure that you always have healthy, delicious meals at your fingertips. This allows you to plan out your days better and for me, I found that it has saved me so much time and money.

Planning Your Meals:

When it comes to meal prep for everyone, strategic planning is key. For example if you are a gamer, consider your gaming schedule and plan your meals, accordingly, making sure to include a balance of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats to fuel both your body and your mind. Aim for simple, nutrient-dense recipes that are easy to prepare in bulk and can be enjoyed throughout the week.

Quick and Easy Meal Prep Recipes:

Need some inspiration to get started? Try whipping up a batch of overnight oats for quick and fuss-free breakfasts, or prepare a big pot of chili or soup that can be portioned out and frozen for future meals. For snacks, consider prepping veggie sticks with hummus or homemade protein bars to keep you fueled during small break sessions.

Batch Cooking and Freezing:

One of the biggest advantages of meal prep is the ability to cook in bulk and freeze individual portions for later (I only recommend this if you have the space). I do not have the space so I meal prep for myself and my boyfriend for 2-3 days and leave it in the fridge. If this is an option you are interested in then Invest in some high-quality containers and get into the habit of labeling and dating your meals for easy organization. Whether you're reheating leftovers or grabbing a pre-made meal from the freezer, you'll appreciate the convenience and time-saving benefits of batch cooking.

Incorporating Variety and Flavor:

To prevent mealtime monotony, don't be afraid to get creative with your meal prep. Experiment with different spices, sauces, and marinades to keep your taste buds excited and engaged. And don't forget to mix things up with a variety of proteins, grains, and vegetables to ensure a well-rounded diet. One of my favorite flavors I love to incorporate is hot sauce on my chicken and sesame seed oil on my vegetables. These are good low-calorie options that will help elevate your meal.

Staying Hydrated:

Last but certainly not least, I CANNOT stress this enough, but hydration is KEY to maintaining peak performance during your day. Keep a water bottle handy and sip regularly throughout your day to stay hydrated and focused. And consider incorporating hydrating beverages like herbal teas or infused water into your meal prep routine to keep things interesting. I drink green tea or my detox tea (spice shop in Soulard) every morning to keep my energy up throughout my day and I drink at least 72oz of water. I carry a 36oz bottle with me everywhere which is very helpful to staying hydrated.

Recipes:

Artichokes:

  • Inspired by my best friend Aj, artichokes add many health benefits to them. Steaming artichokes typically takes about 25 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the artichokes and the method you use. Here's a general guideline for steaming artichokes:

  1. Prepare the artichokes by trimming off the top third of the artichoke and cutting off the stem flush with the base.

  2. If desired, trim the sharp tips of the outer leaves.

  3. Rinse the artichokes under cold water to remove any dirt or debris.

  4. Fill a large pot with a few inches of water and bring it to a boil.

  5. Place a steaming basket or rack in the pot.

  6. Place the prepared artichokes stem-side down in the steaming basket.

  7. Cover the pot with a lid and reduce the heat to medium-low to maintain a steady simmer.

  8. Steam the artichokes until they are tender when pierced with a fork. This typically takes about 25 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the artichokes.

  9. Once cooked, remove the artichokes from the steamer and remove the little hairs in the middle (the choke) then let them cool slightly before serving.

You can test for doneness by inserting a fork into the base of the artichoke. If it goes in easily, the artichoke is ready. Enjoy your steamed artichokes with your favorite dipping sauce! My favorite is garlic butter!

Garlic shrimp

Prep the Shrimp:

  • Peel and devein the shrimp, leaving the tails intact if desired.

  • Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

  1. Season the Shrimp:

    • In a bowl, season the shrimp with corn starch and your preferred seasoning blend. You can use a combination of salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, or any other seasonings you like. Toss the shrimp to coat evenly.

  2. Preheat the Air Fryer:

    • Preheat your air fryer to the recommended temperature for cooking shrimp. This is typically around 375°F (190°C).

  3. Arrange the Shrimp in the Air Fryer Basket:

    • Place the coated shrimp in a single layer in the air fryer basket, making sure they're not overcrowded. You may need to cook them in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.

  4. Air Fry the Shrimp:

    • Cook the shrimp in the preheated air fryer for about 8 to 10 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time. Cooking times may vary depending on the size of the shrimp and the model of your air fryer.

    • Keep an eye on the shrimp towards the end of the cooking time to prevent them from overcooking and becoming too dry.

  5. Make the garlic butter sauce:

    • In a nonstick saucepan bring some chicken stock and 2-4 tablespoons of butter to a simmer. Add about 4-6 diced garlic knobs and cajun seasoning of your choice I use old bay or tonys.

  6. Serve your shrimp:

    • Toss your shrimp in the garlic butter sauce and enjoy or a hot bed of rice and a tossed salad on the side!

Just roll with it

This past Sunday, I was given the opportunity to compete in a doubles bowling tournament at Shrewsbury Lanes in St. Louis, MO. I bowled with my boyfriend one squad and a friend of mine in the next squad. What a ride it was. And another reminder to myself that if you can’t strike here then pack up and cash out. Picture this: pins flying, balls rolling, and a whole lot of strikes. I’m talking about 6-7 in a row string of strikes. It was a day filled with highs, lows, and everything in between.

In the first set of games, I was on fire, and gave em a nice little 226 over three games. It felt like everything was just right, and the pins seemed to be going my way (a lot more than I initially thought). First game and third game, I shot a 215 that shouldve easily been 230. But like I said, if you aint striking take ya a$$ home.

I moved on to the next set with a different partner and I thought everything was going right. I made all the right moves, right ball changes, and I was throwing it great. That did not last long as my 230s turned into a 196. Lost my look completely in that 3rd game and all I can think about is how crazy fast these lanes change. As luck would have it, this next set brought its fair share of challenges. Despite keeping up a solid average of 222, I missed the cash line by a measly 6 pins. Talk about getting shit on! Sure, I was a bit bummed about missing out on some cash, but I was still able to cash from the first set and make up for that loss.

Looking back, I'm taking this experience as a win. I definitely did not have as high expectations for myself as I usually would. I guess I came to terms with the need to score high in this area. This helped me to be mentally tough as I only missed one spare (6-10) the entire tournament with the exception of a 7-10 split. Usually, I would take a tequila shot to calm myself down prior to bowling but taking a shot at 9am did not seem like the move.

After the tournament, my boyfriend and I had some burgers, loaded fries and a delicious waffle with ice cream on it. When I say we treated ourselves, WE ATE. Granted, it was our first meal of the day at 3:30 but damn was it worth it. We then went for a walk until our movie started at 6:00. By this time, we were already exhausted from bowling all morning, feasting, then window shopping at some consignment shop that was selling $400 yeezys. Time flies when you are with good company.

Don’t go broke trying to look rich

In today's uncertain economic landscape, the significance of saving money cannot be overstated. Whether you're preparing for unforeseen emergencies, planning for future goals, or aiming for financial stability, saving money is the cornerstone of financial well-being. Moreover, knowing how to navigate financial hardships is equally vital for weathering economic storms.

First of all, saving money acts as a safety net during emergencies. Life is unpredictable, and unexpected expenses such as medical emergencies, car repairs, or sudden job loss can arise at any moment. Having a robust savings cushion allows individuals to tackle these crises without falling into debt or compromising their financial security. What do you do if you are already in debt though? You have to live below your means. In other words, SPEND LESS. That is so much easier said than done. Amazon makes it so easy to purchase something and know it will arrive within 2 days. TikTok now has a shop that attracts its customers with crazy low prices. I have fallen victim to the TikTok shop and its deals. I spent about $25 for a pickle kit knowing damn well I could have gone to Walmart and made my own for half the cost. Like most of the posts I make, you have to be disciplined in order to achieve the savings you want. I have had many opportunities to save but chose to spend it on things I didn’t need or things that would give me temporary satisfaction. A lot of the spending surprisingly came from food. For example, DoorDash makes it so convenient for me to stay at work and have my food delivered. That can range anywhere from $16-$24 per meal. With that, I could have made 2 meals for myself and my boyfriend for 2 days.

Secondly, saving money enables individuals to achieve their long-term financial goals. Whether it's buying a house, starting a business, or funding education, diligent saving paves the way towards realizing aspirations. By setting aside funds regularly, individuals can gradually build the capital needed to pursue their dreams, fostering financial independence and empowerment. Moreover, saving money fosters financial discipline and responsible money management. It encourages individuals to prioritize their spending, distinguish between needs and wants, and cultivate healthy financial habits. Through budgeting and mindful expenditure, individuals can optimize their resources, minimize unnecessary expenses, and allocate funds towards savings goals effectively.

Now, let's address the inevitable reality of financial hardships. Despite our best efforts, we may encounter periods of financial difficulty due to various reasons such as job loss, economic downturns, or unexpected expenses. During such times, it's crucial to remain calm, resilient, and proactive in managing finances. Especially for those who do not have access to health or dental insurance, the bills add up and you find yourself spending years paying off one visit.

One effective strategy for dealing with financial hardships is to assess and prioritize expenses. Identify essential costs such as housing, utilities, and groceries, and allocate funds accordingly. Don’t deposit into your sports betting accounts because you think Jordan Poole is gonna put up 20 points. He wont. Additionally, explore opportunities to reduce discretionary spending and always look for ways to save whether it be buying the great value brand or buying in bulk.

Furthermore, consider exploring alternative sources of income to supplement your finances temporarily. This could involve freelance work, part-time employment, or selling unused possessions. Diversifying income streams can provide additional financial stability during challenging times. Some resources I found helpful when I saved for a car was Doordash and Instacart. They are quick but you have to spend a bit of time.

Additionally, don't hesitate to seek support from trusted financial advisors, community resources, or support networks. Whether it's seeking guidance on budgeting, exploring debt relief options, or accessing financial assistance programs, reaching out for help can offer valuable insights and assistance in navigating financial hardships.

In conclusion, saving money and effectively managing financial hardships are indispensable aspects of financial literacy and resilience. By prioritizing saving, you can build a strong financial foundation and pursue their goals with confidence. Moreover, by employing proactive strategies and seeking support during tough times, individuals can successfully overcome financial challenges and emerge stronger and more resilient than ever.

Ballin' on the Sidelines: A Playbook for Post-College Athlete Life

Transitioning from the life of a college athlete into the 'real world' is undoubtedly a journey filled with both challenges and opportunities. As someone who has experienced this shift firsthand, I can attest to the myriad of emotions and adjustments that come with leaving behind the ‘student athlete’ you and transitioning into the next chapter of your life. This not only apply to student athletes but students in general with less responsibilities. Whether you had a set schedule of working out and school or if you were a party goer, I think everyone can relate to this post in terms of life after you graduate.

One of the most significant aspects of life after being a college athlete / student is the newfound freedom. Suddenly, there's no coach dictating your schedule, no mandatory practices or games to attend. Not to mention, you weren’t worried about bills (most of us) and being an ‘adult’ hasn’t fully hit you. While this freedom can be liberating, it also requires a significant shift in mindset and discipline. Without the external pressures of athletics, it's up to you to create structure and set goals for yourself. I found this to be the hardest thing as I was so used to a consistent schedule of workouts, bowling, and school. Though it has been almost 3 years since I have graduated, sometimes I feel like I haven’t put myself in a consistent routine. Suddenly it feels like a fresh start after graduating. Everything is brand-new. New responsibilities, new changes, and new feelings.

Another aspect of post-college athlete / student life is finding a new sense of identity. For many of us, our identity has been closely tied to our sport for years. I was always tied to bowling at a very young age. Now I don’t compete nearly as much as I use to. This does not bother me though, as I mentioned earlier everything is constantly changing and as you take yourself out of your comfort zone, you begin to realize how much more you are capable of. It can be challenging to redefine ourselves outside of that context. However, this transition also presents an opportunity for personal growth and exploration. It's a chance to discover new passions, interests, and talents that may have been overshadowed by athletics. One of the biggest challenges for former college athletes is staying physically active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. After years of intense training and competition, it can be tempting to let fitness slide. However, prioritizing health and wellness remains crucial in this new chapter of life. Whether it's through recreational sports, group fitness classes, or simply hitting the gym, finding ways to stay active can help preserve both physical and mental well-being.

On a practical level, transitioning out of college athletics often means navigating a new career path. While some athletes may have their sights set on a professional sports career, many others pursue different avenues. The skills and discipline developed through athletics—such as teamwork, time management, and goal setting—can be invaluable in various professions. It's essential to leverage these skills and experiences to excel in whatever career path you choose to pursue. I have come across a lot of people who peeked in high school and even more who peeked in college. You need to remind yourself that is okay to let go of that part of your life. The more you hold on to it, the longer it will take for you to enter the next part of your life. That does not mean to completely forget about it, it means to remember it as a crucial learning point in time that has developed you to become the next best version of yourself.

Lastly, life after college athletics is about embracing change and embracing new opportunities. It's about cherishing the memories and lessons learned on the field or court while embracing the challenges and adventures that lie ahead. While the transition may not always be easy, it's a chance to write the next chapter of your story, filled with endless possibilities and opportunities for growth. Through the close friends who became family, to the people I’ve let go of, the coaches and players I never got along with (idgaf tbh). I wouldn’t trade it for anything for these are some of lifes great blessings and lessons.

Chef Boyar-Tee Meal Prep

Last night was a whirlwind of activity in my kitchen, as I decided to make my own pickles. I love pickles, and pickles are a good and healthy snack when you are craving something, you just need to watch out for the sodium. Pickles have helped me to lose about 5 lbs. within the last month because it is very healthy and has a lot of benefits. Cucumbers, which are the main ingredient in pickles, are naturally high in fiber. Fiber is essential for digestive health, promoting regular bowel movements, and aiding in digestion. Including pickles in your diet can contribute to your daily fiber intake. Pickles are also typically low in calories, making them a great option for those looking to manage their weight or calorie intake. They can be a satisfying snack or accompaniment to meals without adding significant calories. Here is the recipe and instructions that I used to make mine.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of water

  • 2 cups of white vinegar

  • 3 tbsp sugar

  • 2-3 cucumbers (pickling cucumbers)

  • 1 jalapeno per serving (optional if you like spicy)

  • 2 bay leaves

  • dill

  • half a bulb of garlic

  • red pepper flakes

  • peppercorn

  • Corriander seeds

Directions:

  1. Put 1/2 cup of water, 2 cups of white vinegar, and 3 tbsp of sugar in a pot. I added dried pepper to give it an extra spicy kick.

  2. Bring to a boil till sugar is dissolved and remove off the heat and let cool.

  3. Prepare your cucumbers. While my brine is cooling, I sliced my cucumbers into discs and put it into a mason jar with half a bulb of garlic, dill, chili pepper flakes, slices jalapenos, pepper corn, bay leaves, and all the other spices.

  4. Pour the brine into the jar and shake it up a little

  5. Enjoy! The longer it sits, the better they taste.

But last night wasn't just about pickles—it was also about meal prepping and making intentional choices for my health and well-being. I took some time to prepare a nutritious meal including Chicken drums, seasoned cucumbers, sweet potatoes, and edamame. Throughout the week I also meal prepped pork, rice, and broccoli for lunch. this ensures that I have wholesome options readily available to fuel my body and mind.

Ingredients:

  • 4 chicken drums

  • seasoning of your choice

  • two small sweet potatoes

  • Frozen edamame

Directions:

  1. Microwave edamame for 4 minutes till ready

  2. Steam sweet potato till fork tender

  3. Season chicken to your liking and airfry 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Flip and air fry for 375 degrees.

As I indulged in the satisfaction of my homemade pickles and prepared nutritious meals for the days ahead, I also made a conscious decision to cut back on drinking. It's a journey filled with its own set of challenges and uncertainties, but last night served as a reminder that small steps towards positive change can lead to big transformations in the long run.

In the end, last night wasn't just about pickles or meal prepping—it was about embracing the simple joys of homemade goodness, nourishing my body with wholesome food, and making mindful choices to prioritize my health and well-being (as I write this eating my ramen). My best friend and I came up with a plan to keep each other accountable and set some goals for ourselves. Keeping up with myself and my thoughts get me excited for my future. I can’t help but feel a sense of empowerment knowing that I'm taking steps towards a healthier, happier me.

Why taking a mental break is GREAT

Over the last month, I haven’t been able to post much, if at all. I told myself that I would dedicate at least 30 minutes every other day to make a post and upload something here. Life gets in the way and like most humans, I lost motivation to do anything. Making this post is my way of staying connected and healthily channeling my thoughts. I am not gonna go on a rant about my personal life because the last thing I want is for this to be a therapy session.

So what did I do exactly? I focused a lot of time on myself and my relationship with my man, fam, and God.
Taking a mental break is like hitting the pause button on the chaos of everyday life—it's a chance to catch your breath, recharge your batteries, and recalibrate your mindset. Here's why it's not just great, but essential for your well-being:

  1. Restores Mental Clarity: When you're constantly juggling tasks and responsibilities, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and mentally foggy. There were times when I questioned myself whether I was making the correct decisions and if I was getting in my way of being the best version of myself. Taking a break allows your brain to unwind and reset, giving you the mental clarity needed to tackle challenges with renewed focus and energy.

  2. Boosts Creativity: Ever notice how your best ideas often come to you when you least expect them—like in the shower or during a stroll? That's because taking a break from the hustle and bustle allows your mind to wander freely, sparking creativity and innovative thinking.

  3. Reduces Stress: Chronic stress can take a serious toll on your physical and mental health. By stepping away from stressful situations and permitting yourself to relax, you can lower your cortisol levels, reduce tension, and promote a sense of calm and well-being.

  4. Improves Productivity: Contrary to popular belief, constantly grinding away without breaks isn't the most effective way to get things done. Research shows that taking regular breaks can boost productivity by preventing burnout, enhancing focus, and increasing overall efficiency.

  5. Enhances Problem-Solving Skills: Ever notice how solutions to seemingly impossible problems suddenly become clear after taking a break? That's because stepping back from the problem allows you to gain a fresh perspective, consider alternative approaches, and come up with more effective solutions.

  6. Promotes Work-Life Balance: In today's hyper-connected world, it's all too easy to blur the lines between work and leisure time. Taking regular mental breaks helps establish boundaries and prioritize self-care, ensuring that you maintain a healthy balance between your professional and personal life.

  7. Strengthens Relationships: Whether it's spending quality time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, or simply enjoying some alone time, taking mental breaks allows you to nurture important relationships and reconnect with the things that bring you joy outside of work.

In short, taking a mental break isn't just a luxury—it's a vital component of maintaining your overall health, happiness, and productivity. So the next time you're feeling overwhelmed or burnt out, permit yourself to step away, take a deep breath, and embrace the rejuvenating power of a well-deserved break. Your mind—and your future self—will thank you for it.

Hawaii Holidays

Twas the season to be sandy, not snowy, as I traded snowflakes for surf breaks and escaped the 20° weather in the Midwest. I return to work with the same questions being asked from “How was your vacation?” to “What was the weather like?”. It is safe to say my vacation was great and the weather was 77° on average. The food, even better.

During this trip I discovered The Beast Unleashed Monster Seltzer variety pack and Arizona Ice Tea Seltzers. All I have to say is 10/10. I CANNOT have caffeine. I get way too jittery and my body feels like its having an anxiety attack. But these seltzers taste like they substituted the caffeine for alcohol. I will take seltzers over beer any day. Anyone who says seltzers is a bitch drink is the biggest liar ever. The taste of a seltzer is so much better than beer. Don’t come at me. I said what I said.

Overall, I had an amazing time with my family and friends. Took me a while to make this post as I am getting back into the groove of work and the time difference. I miss my life im Hawaii, maybe things would be different if it wasn’t so damn expensive. As of now, the Midwest allows me to save money and having those near and dear to my heart in Hawaii makes it that much more exciting to go back to visit.

The red-eye from Hawaii to Denver was a tiring haul. The dim plane, buzzing engines, and occasional bumps made it hard to rest. Passengers' low chatter filled the cabin as fatigue set in. When we touched down in Denver all I craved was more sleep despite the 7 hours I had already endured and the 4 washington apples I had prior to my flight.

My Everyday Life

In the bustling rhythm of life, I've found myself at the intersection of various passions, wearing different hats each day (not literally, I always have my hair up) Recently, my days have been a whirlwind of scheduling tasks, practicing software development, video games with friends, and savoring the thrill of sports betting – especially when it comes to the NFL and NBA, with the Golden State Warriors holding a special place in my heart and my fists.

A Day in the Life of a Scheduler:
As a scheduler, my world revolves around timelines, deadlines, and the intricate dance of coordinating tasks. From juggling meetings to ensuring smooth workflow transitions, every day is something new. The role has taught me the art of organization, the importance of effective communication, and the satisfaction of seeing a well-executed plan come to fruition. I deal with a lot of customers and do a lot of backend customer service. Sometimes these customer test my patience but in the end you gotta do what you gotta do to make your bag.

Getting clapped by kids in Fortnite :
In the midst of my busy schedule I found games to be my go-to escape. I got my gaming PC a little over a year ago. At first I thought “Damn who wants to pay $1300-$3000 thats way too expensive” and to be honest it is. The upkeep and the maintenance can be a lot of work. For me I think its therapeutic cleaning out the dust. Before you flame me just know the only games I would play were Minecraft and Roller Coaster Tycoon. After I got my PC, my friends taught me how to play COD MW2 & Fortnite. I think its fun  strategizing with them and simply enjoying the camaraderie of multiplayer games. This was the perfect balance to my hectic schedule. Playing with friends adds a social dimension that I needed, turning every gaming session into a memorable experience filled with laughter, challenges, and shared victories. I watch a lot of streams and I always wonder how they get as good as they are. Personally I cannot play controller, if its not keyboard and mouse then thanks for carrying me. I will drop one kill but only cause I stole it. Recently, our lobbies have been SWEATY like bro let me land. But thats just the name of the game. Connect with me on the contact page and we can run a game on my Twitch.

Exploring Software Development:
Beyond the scheduling, my curiosity has led me to explore the dynamic landscape of software development. Learning new programming languages, delving into coding challenges, and staying updated on industry trends have become exciting facets of my personal and professional growth. It's a journey… A HARD JOURNEY of continuous learning and problem-solving that complements the structured nature of my scheduling role.

Thriving on Sports Excitement:
Amidst my varied pursuits, the exhilaration of sports betting adds an extra layer of excitement. With a keen interest in the NFL and NBA, I find myself analyzing team performances, player statistics, and occasionally placing bets on my favorite teams. The Golden State Warriors IS MY TEAM. If you wanna talk about Draymond Green then lemme tell you, bleacher report on instagram CRACKS ME UP. My boyfriend calls me a “fake fan” because I smack talk my team a lot. I call it passionate.

Finding Balance and Enjoying the Journey:
Balancing work, gaming, software development, and sports enthusiasm might seem like a challenging act, but it's a journey I wouldn't trade for anything. Each facet of my life complements the others, creating a harmonious blend of structure and spontaneity. It's about finding joy in the everyday moments, celebrating victories on all fronts, and appreciating the diverse tapestry that makes up my life.

Get down to business

First and foremost, you are probably wondering where I got the name “Bidness Talk”. For the longest time my best friend and I were interested in creating a podcast with our entire friend group. Like most friend groups, we thought we were the funniest people we knew. We were born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii so our slang and pronunciation were a bit different. If you have ever spoke to someone who spoke “pigeon” or “Hawaiian-Creole english” you’ll notice that the word “three” sounds like “tree”. So for us, “Business” kind of sounded like “Bidness”. With that being said, we decided that if we ever started this podcast the that would be the name of it. However, since we were both in college on opposite ends of the country at that time we never deployed our podcast let alone knew where we would post it. Like most young adults, life gets in the way and our schedules never aligned. Maybe one day when we actually get a podcast started I can post it here and have everyone else be the judge of it.

Now that I got that out the way, let me really introduce myself. My name is Tyra, and as I mentioned before I am from Honolulu. Typically, when you envision someone from Hawaii you think of Hula, Surfing, Palm Trees, and anything tropical. These weren’t always my case. Although this culture is embedded in me, I found my interests to expand beyond it. Growing up I was part of a Bowling family. At least 2-3 times a week you could find me in the bowling (that is still the case today). Unlike the typical beach goer, my family spent majority of our time in the bowling alley. Through this sport I was able to obtain a scholarship to bowl for a University in Tennessee where I got my Bachelors Degree in Conservation Biology. I really wanted to study marine biology so this was the best opportunity for me. At first it was nice that I was able to get a scholarship, play the sport I love, and study something I have always dreamed of since living on the islands. This was not the case… Wild life in Tennessee compared to Hawaii is no joke. It was completely different than what I had imagined, like these animals can actually f*ck you up, most reptiles are poisonous, turtles snap, ticks bite and so much more. This lead me to realize that I am so much better in the lab than I am in the field. From there I changed my major to Software Development in hopes I could find something that would align with my lab skills and my tech skills. I was able to obtain my Masters Degree in Software Development about 2 months ago and still trying to figure life out. The difference in these two degree for me was that one taught me more about job interviews in its study than the other. I knew I wanted to be able to look back and not have any regrets in my career choice. I am glad I was able to make that switch. It taught me that life is constantly changing and starting over isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes I feel bad for myself for not sticking out something I once dreamed of (not only in my studies) but realized later it wasn’t something for me.
